Case study: Reducing blood glucose levels

A 49-year old male patient came in for another acupuncture treatment on June 29, 2008. This patient has been consistently receiving acupuncture from me since August 2006. During all of his treatments, he was always treated to help with his pain. He is a very athletic man, so we focus on treating any pain that may have been caused by tennis, racquetball, ballroom dancing, iceskating and golf. He typically will do 3 of these 5 activities on a weekly basis. When there is no pain, we focus on preventing pain.

His treatment on June 29 was atypical from all other treatments. I wrote to you all before explaining that this particular patient had a very limited diet. He loves meat and potatoes. Being from Nebraska, that was pretty much what he was accustomed to and he favored candies over fruits and vegetables in general.

Since the middle of June, he was forced to make a lifestyle change, which he was NOT happy about. The 2 years of my nagging that he should eat more of a variety of foods finally had to be taken seriously. He was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. He was put on 2,000 mg Glucophage. He put himself on a diet: http://www.fatloss4idiots.com/. Our acupuncture treatments shifted towards really bringing down his blood sugar level. Unfortunately, for the last 2 years, I have found acupuncture to be purely ineffective when working ALONE to bring down blood sugar. I put him on Equilibrium, a sophisticated Chinese herbal formula to lower blood sugar. The patient saw me from then on for acupuncture treatments once weekly for the most part until September 5. He missed four weeks in the summer.

Today on September 5, the patient has reported that his initial blood glucose level 2 months ago was 9.8. It was supposed to be a 6.0. Due to his commitment with everything that he has incorporated into his lifestyle, his blood glucose level is now 5.8. His doctor reduced the Glucophage from 2,000 mg/day to 1,500 mg/day.

To be completely fair in this report, it is important to understand that the medical doctor does not believe that the Chinese herbs are effective in the lowering of his blood glucose. He believes that the Equilibrium is not effective in comparison to simply watching his diet and taking his Glucophage.

I am the acupuncturist/herbalist. I know that the herbs are extremely effective. I gave the patient the comprehensive explanation of the formula. Below are a few excepts that I have taken from the report. Dr. John Chen is the founder of Evergreen Herbs. He is a doctor of pharmacology and of Chinese herbology.
