Migraines – Testimonial

September 23rd, 2015
MIGRAINES
I have suffered from migraines for the past 13 years! I found Ana on Yelp and couldn’t believe all the amazing reviews she had. I made an appointment and went in. Wasn’t sure what to expect and was a bit hesitant since nothing has helped my migraines. I watched as people would fall into a deep sleep and wake up saying they felt refreshed and amazing! I wasn’t sure what they were talking about and couldn’t imagine not having a migraine….as I continued to see Ana 2-3 times a week…
6 MONTHS PASSED WITHOUT A MIGRAINE!!!!
I couldn’t believe it and neither could my friends and family. It was the best I had ever felt. Unfortunately, I had to stop seeing Ana because it was time to put my son in preschool and couldn’t afford to do both…Four years later, my boys are in school full-time and I have been seeing Ana again for the past few months. I contacted her and told her that I had come to her 4 years ago and would like to come in again…and she immediately remembered!
I can’t begin to express how Ana has changed my life! I want to write it in the sky for everyone to know about it! I feel amazing! I am on my way to being migraine free and I can’t wait! I am now one of those people who can’t wait to get there and fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed!
I have never met anyone like Ana. She truly cares about her patients and is just a breathe of fresh air. No amount of words can express how grateful I am to you Ana. xoxo

I have never written a review before on Yelp, but my experience had to be shared.  I can’t say enough about Anna and the wonderful job she does.  I have had numerous treatments with an acupuncturist and all have been quite successful.  However, the balance method Anna uses is like nothing I have ever experienced before.  I have already been to 5 treatments, but I noticed results almost immediately.  Anna takes the time to explain exactly what is going on and makes you feel very at ease.  She is warm and friendly and creates a very happy environment from the moment you walk in the door.  You instantly feel that she cares about you and graduating you from your pain.

I just took my wife for her very first acupuncture visit ever and she had a wonderful experience as well.  We are so blessed to have found Anna.  She is a gem and she definitely has an amazing gift for healing.

I’m a believer in acupuncture, but have been too afraid to try it myself.  However, I had a fall about a year ago, which resulted in broken bones and an eventual need for surgery to repair my rotator cuff.  The healing has not been going well, and I’ve been in a lot of pain.  This has also caused my migraines to increase, and I’ve developed RSD.   Reaching the point of being willing to try anything, but not wanting to depend on stronger drugs, and on the recommendation of my Physical Therapist, I went to see Anna.  She talked with me first, explaining her technique and what I could expect, answered all my questions, and made me feel at ease.  Honestly, I was surprised at how easy it was.  And I felt improvement after my first visit!  I didn’t tell my therapist I had seen Anna, I wanted to see if she noticed anything.  She did!  Then I knew it wasn’t “all in my head”, there really was slight improvement in my range of motion and the pain was different.  I’m going to continue seeing her, and I recommend her to anyone who wishes to feel better.

Anna is a pure soul with a passion for healing, and that is exactly what she does at Elements in Harmony.  She has helped me with so many issues including allergies, vertigo, physical pain, swelling, autoimmune and carb cravings.

I was actually looking for a chiropractor back in 2008 when I first met Anna and felt an instant connection with her.  She has helped me physically, emotionally and spiritually and has been a huge blessing in my life.  Thank you Anna for all that you have given me…

Seriously! Anna is a freak of nature! She just has a way of making things feel better. Period. I have bone spurs in my back that were causing me sleepless nights. After a few visits with Anna, my back was feeling 80%-90% better. She also increased mobility in my left shoulder by apparently making the 15 year old scar tissue from an old basketball injury practically disappear. Can you admit that you have road rage? Anna makes the Mr. Hyde in me stay within me when I’m on the road. What can I say? I’d go see Anna for just about anything and have sent several friends to see her for their ailments too. She just fixes things! I heard she gets women pregnant all the time as well. I don’t think I’ll be needing that though. Bottom line – Anna gets the job done and she’s just cool to talk to. Anna also has the coolest dog on the planet to go along with her awesome family. If you see Anna because of this review, I’m sure you won’t leave her office hating me. Seriously!

I’ve used Anna several times for acupuncture.  I had migraine headaches and occasional arm and wrist pain from using the computer too much and Anna’s treatments took care of it all.  Anna is a phenomenal acupuncturist and takes time to listen to you and understand your pain and symptoms.  It’s best to sign up for several treatments as you can’t expect everything to go away with just one treatment (just like a gym membership, you can’t expect phenomenal results after one workout).  My insurance covered her services so definitely worth checking to see if you’re covered.

Here’s a letter from a new patient that I recently treated:

Hi Anna,
I am pleased to be under your care.  I enjoyed meeting with you and learning more about your practice.

Admittedly, I was open, but skeptical.  After the first needle went in, that changed forever.  It felt like an electrical shock that ran from my finger tips all the way up to my right shoulder.  I jumped like someone had hit me with those paddles they use to restart a persons heart.  I know you felt me jump too.  It may not have been as dramatic for you, but it was a real experience for me.

I had some difficulty relaxing. That is something I want to work on, but once the needles were all in, I had no discomfort and I found resting on the table very  peaceful.  I thought about all of the things in my life that I am grateful for and all of the many blessings that I have and continue to receive.  It was very pleasant.

While I was lying there, I felt the incredible urge to smile.   When we left, I felt almost euphorically happy.  Not like a high, just an overwhelming sense of well being and peace.  I went to bed very happy and I did feel surrounded with positive energy.  My pain level/discomfort level is 0 today.  Yep, ZERO!

Thank you for your gift of healing and for sharing it with me.

Do you have ANXIETY?

For almost two years, I was experiencing panic attacks. Not every day, and never for more than an hour or two at a time, but my stress level would build to a point that I would not be functional. I would feel closed in, and just shut down emotionally. I really didn’t need much of anything to set it off, either – sometimes just the fear that I was going to have a panic attack caused one! Previous to this, I had always been a strong, calm person, someone able to handle anything thrown my way, so this was a big change for me.

I came to Anna for treatment of other issues, but I did mention this problem to her in our first conversation and in the initial paperwork. Anna treated this issue through acupuncture, of course, but she also talked to me about it, and would give me “homework” exercises – basically different thoughts and phrases to repeat to myself at home that would help with the process. The amount of genuine care and concern that she has always given me through the treatments or through a conversation or email is what sets her apart. Anna is not only a skilled acupuncturist, she is a warm and caring person that truly wants to help all of her patients to be free of pain, both physical and emotional.

Now, almost 9 months after starting treatments, I can’t believe the difference. It was a gradual progression, and I can’t say that I never feel stress anymore – I am human after all! But I don’t have that same “closed in” feeling, and I am able to work through it. I haven’t had a panic attack in over 2 months, and when I do experience stress, I don’t feel overwhelmed by it. Before I started my acupuncture treatments, I had tried meditation, anti-anxiety pills, even taking a leave of absence from work to alleviate the panic attacks – nothing helped. But now, through my acupuncture treatments, I feel like my old self again. I know that everyone is different, but I couldn’t be happier with my results. I highly recommend acupuncture treatments.

Update – 1/19/2012

“This update has been a long time in the making. I have been a patient at Elements in Harmony for well over 2 years. When I started seeing Anna, acupuncture was not a part of my long-term plan. I had hoped to be in and out in a few sessions and figured that I would stop seeing her when my anxiety was gone. My life has been completely changed and I can’t imagine giving it up. With my anxiety gone (yes, completely), I continue to see major (although sometimes subtle) positive improvements in my body, my mind, and in my life.

Anna is a wiz with physical issues like dry skin, insomnia, digestion problems, joint pain, allergies, and headaches (the list goes on). She’s done wonders for my immune system. In fact, I can’t remember the last cold I had. And, ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you, I no longer suffer the emotional and physical effects of PMS. (Goodbye cramps and hormonal roller-coaster!) Stress has less and less effect on me. Anna has also reduced my compulsive thinking dramatically. I have virtually no road-rage and find myself a much more peaceful, clearheaded, and focused person.

Here are a few things an acupuncture newbie might have questions about:

Needles. I know, I know – you hate needles. I do, too. (Yes, I’m serious!) I’m here to tell you that acupuncture doesn’t hurt. Sure, one needle out of a hundred may sting a bit – but it’s NOTHING like getting a shot. Injection needles are significantly larger and most of the pain is from the fluid, itself, being injected. If you’re truthfully scared, ask Anna to let you try a single needle before you buy a session. She’ll give you some time to try it out – she’s cool like that.

Community sessions. Most people will opt for “community sessions” because they’re less expensive than private-room sessions. You’ll be in a large room with a few other people. Soft music helps drown out any noise created by folks coming or going. You also have the option to wear ear-buds and listen, quietly, to your own tunes. Either way, be prepared to meditate or sleep for your time in treatment.

Privacy. Many acupuncturists who offer community sessions usually don’t have a private space where you can share your medical and personal concerns. Anna has a private office where she sees patients before treatment. You are able to discuss your issues without other people knowing your business.

Cost. I’ve done research on acupuncture prices and Anna is significantly less costly than other practitioners. She also offers deals for regular patients. Obviously acupuncture is an investment, but it’s worth the long-term pay-off.

Ongoing learning. Every time I visit, Anna tells me about some new thing she’s learned. Whether it’s from a book she’s been reading, a conference she attended, or some breakthrough in alternative medicine, Anna is a true healer – constantly evaluating her current methods and searching for further information to help those who trust her with their care.

Oh, and by the way, at the time that I’m posting this, Anna has nearly 50 Yelp reviews. You’ll want to make sure to go through the 40 ‘filtered’ reviews of people praising her healing. You can find a nearly-invisible link to them at the bottom of this list of reviews.

If Western medicine can’t (or won’t) help, if you’re sick of being sick, or if you just want better peace of mind, give Anna a try!

PCOS & Fertility
After many years of drastic measures of avoiding pregnancy, my husband and I decided, it’s time to start our family, let’s just stop all birth control and if it happens, it happens. Fast forward a few too many years and we still weren’t expecting.

I decided we both needed to be tested for infertility problems. After many doctor appointments and a lot of blood work, it was determined that I was the problem. I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrom). Basically, I wasn’t ovulating due to a hormonal imbalance. I underwent a few treatments with fertility drugs and also an IUI, with no success. At that point, I was devestated. Not to mention broke and tired of being treated like “just another patient.” We decided to take a break from the Western approach and have a carefree summer.

As summer was coming to an end, the baby bug came right back to me. I knew I didn’t want to go back to the regular doctor, so I decided to find an acupuncturist. I’ve had success in the past with acupuncture and Chinese medicine, so I thought, what the heck, it can’t hurt, let’s try that approach instead. After scouring the internet, I found an acupuncturist that was local and her website had a testimonial from another patient she treated with PCOS. That’s when I called Anna to arrange my first appointment.

I first spoke with Anna over the phone, she was very thorough, giving me her expectations and how long treatments may take considering my history. Of course, I was thinking to myself, ugh, I hope it doesn’t take another year or two to see results, since I wanted to get pregnant years ago. I wanted to be pregnant NOW and I wasn’t getting any younger!!! She told me up front, that we’re getting YOU healthy first and when it’s the right time, the things you want WILL happen.

I can’t thank Anna enough. After following her guidance and was diligent with my treatments, I’m now expecting a baby girl in September. I owe it all to Anna and I believe in her work and treatments. Even though she has a bustling, busy health center, she always has time to chat with you and she makes you feel comfortable. I believe the time she spends with each of her patients, contribute to the power of her medicine and the healing ability. The more you open up to her, the more she can help you achieve your health goals.

Even after I achieved pregnancy, I continued with my treatments. I believe my pregancy has been problem-free and I will have a strong healthy baby due to Anna’s help.

I would definitely refer Anna to any of my family, friends or co-workers in need of an alternate route to healthy living. I think she’s the best at what she does and takes pride in her work.

Excited soon-to-be-mommy,
Kristi K.

So you want to be a MAMA?

I can help you get pregnant NATURALLY.

I’ve been a mom now since May 2004.  Many of my patients have met my beautiful and radiant Angilynn.  She’s the apple of my eye and I take great pride in her.  There’s also Anais, my sparkling bundle of joy who is 20 months old.  (That’s just over a year and a half for you non-parents who hate it when people with kids give months for ages.)

I love being a mother and I wish for many others with the right reasons to become parents.  As overpopulated as we are in this world, I still believe that for the ones who have more love to make this world a better place, you have the right to feel as fulfilled as my husband and I do.

Andrew and I planned our family and they came about the time we wanted them.  I was 30 when Angilynn was born.  I was 28 years old when I got married.  The timing for us was RIGHT.  I started working on my health at age 20 with the POWERS of Chinese medicine.  This means that I started acupuncture at age 20 and I was devoutly on herbs for a minimum of 2 years to regulate my period; to regulate my life.  You read it right, it took me 10 years to get my health PERFECT.  Actually, 99% of that work was the first two years.  Some of my YouTube videos and blog articles will reveal just a few of some personal changes that happened from 1994-1996 with the POWERS of acupuncture and Chinese herbs.  I received acupuncture 2+ times a week and I was on 2-4 formulas a month, depending on my cycle and how stressed I was as a Chinese medical student.

The acupuncture and the herbs regulated my health.  Chinese medicine regulated and optimized my life.

I lost 48 pounds (I went from a size 8 to a size 2).  My periods became PERFECT.  My hives went away.  I was no longer crying at the drop of a hat.  My emotions were under control.  (I was depressed and easily anxious.)  My appetite became normal.  (I was addicted to food – more like I had an abnormally disturbing relationship with food.)  I stopped having chocolate and sweet cravings.  (I was addicted to sugar.)  I started having normal bowel movements daily.  (I used to have 1-2 painful bowel movements a week.)   My weak ankle since a bicycle accident at age 7 got stronger and I stopped spraining it every so often. I had a horrible immune system growing up given that I had an ear/nose/throat specialist for most of my childhood.  I snored horribly and I grew up chronically congested, not being able to say my own name, Anna, without sounding like “Adda.”  My own father called me a horse every night at dinner because I did not have the ability to chew my food with my mouth closed.  I was not able to breathe comfortably through my severely congested nose.  There were other things that improved DRAMATICALLY, but I forgot many of them at this point (it has been 18 years since I became a patient).

It was a great deal of commitment to focus on my health for many years, but I did it because I was determined to be a healthy adult.  Fortunately for me, those years of commitment to healing continues to pay dividends.  When it came time to have healthy, happy babies, it was a non-issue.  This is what I bring to the table as a Chinese medical practitioner who works personally with couples wanting to raise a family.

I started working with patients in 1999.  When women came to me wanting to become mamas, I took whatever kind of patient who walked through my door.  It didn’t matter to me if they were trying to get pregnant naturally or with fertility doctors.  I did that until 2007.  Since then I’ve limited my practice to patients who want to get pregnant naturally, making few exceptions.  As of March 2012, I’ve taken my last patient who wants to get pregnant without only Chinese medicine.  I respect women who want to work with their fertility doctors, but my heart can’t take it anymore.  I’m not the right one for them and I would prefer referring women investing in thousands of dollars to work with a highly skilled acupuncturist who specializes in fertility and works closely with a fertility medical group.  In my practice now, I’m dedicated only to women whose hearts, minds and souls can fully practice Chinese medicine in order to get pregnant and if somehow I can’t help them get pregnant in the time realistically “promised,” then I will responsibly recommend the next step.

I love babies.  We’re overpopulated on this planet, but I still love babies.  What I love about babies is that they’re cute and fun.  They’re also a whole lot of work. Which is why:

I love parents who want to responsibly have babies.  I want a planet of healthy, happy babies.  Every mama and papa that I work with, I get to know them in a very intimate way in my practice.  I want to know what makes them tick.  I want to know if their reason to receive Chinese medicine is for them to BECOME HEALTHY, so that they can naturally CREATE A HEALTHY, HAPPY BABY.

I’m a purist by many standards when it comes to the practice of Chinese medicine.  It’s very easy to understand Chinese medicine, if you’re healthy and whole in body, mind and spirit, you’re going to get pregnant naturally.  This goes for the man and the woman.  Let’s start with the spirt and the mind.  If a person get angered easily, cries easily, gets emotional easily, finds themselves anxious easily, prone to mood swings, etc., it’s probably likely that from a Chinese medical perspective, something is off with that person in one of the “5 phases” (organ systems), thus causing them to not have stable emotions.  This is a key element that anyone trying to get pregnant and is having a difficult time to do so naturally on their own must understand.  If this is you and you are constantly crying in the car or you get pissed off at some minute issue or you get startled easily or there’s just some emotion that is predominant in your entire being other than CALMNESS, then we’ve got some work to do with both acupuncture and Chinese herbs to get you emotionally stable.  This is one reason why IN MY PRACTICE I understand why a woman and her partner can’t get pregnant naturally.

The body follows the mind, the mind follows the spirit.

If the mind and spirit are not calm and relaxed most of the time and a woman is having a hard time conceiving, then the emotions are a good place for me to start.

It would be ideal to do BOTH acupuncture and Chinese herbs.  The woman should be on herbs from at least 2 months into treatment.  Sometimes I like to see what 5-10 treatments without herbs will do just to see how a woman will respond to my work with just acupuncture.  Sometimes acupuncture is all it takes.  95% of the time, herbs will be needed for better effectiveness because “we need to treat substance with substance.”  Substance in this case means herbs.  Acupuncture treats the energetic field of the body.  Acupuncture is NOT substance.  In other words, I use acupuncture to affect the Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang of a woman, but to BETTER affect the Blood, Yin and Yang of a woman, I can do it better with herbal formulas. (I am purposefully not explaining in full detail the concepts of Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang in this article for simplicity sake.)

In most cases, women’s emotional health is directly linked to our menstrual health.  If a woman’s menses are not PERFECT, I’m going to want to make it perfect with acupuncture, but mostly, with Chinese herbal formulas.  This is a perfect cycle and is nothing short of what I strive for with every woman:

1.  28-32 day cycles

2.  3-5 day periods

3.  NO premenstrual changes (no migraines, no back pain, no breast tenderness, no spotting, no cramping, no mood swings, no depression, no acne, no cravings, NOTHING)

4.  bright red blood for 3-5 days ONLY (no brown, no dark red, no pink, no purple, no black)

5.  NO clots

That’s it.  There should be a seamless stream of positive energy from end of one cycle to the beginning of the next. This is my homework.  This is what I expect of my work with every woman.  This makes a very complicated situation into a very simple situation.

What I need:

the woman to do exactly what I advise if they want exactly what their stated goals are in their initial paperwork.

Does it work?

90% of the time.

When does it not work?

There are women who work too hard.  Their commutes are too long. They’re sitting too long. They’re standing too  long.  Their responsibilities in life are too strong on the energy of their “kidneys.”  They’re exerting too much energy into life.  Life is literally sucking the kidney energy out of them. The kidney energy is vital to proper menstrual health (as well as the “spleen, liver and heart”), but in my practice, I need the energy of the kidneys as preserved as possible.

There are other reasons why there are “inexplicable infertility.”  I’m not God and I don’t have complete control over a woman’s health.  In difficult situations, I wish that I could see the woman 3 times a week for a year and put her on raw herbal formulas (the ones that I used to take) and have her cook it 45 minutes-1.5 hours a day.  It’s work and a lot of financial investment, but it’s worth it.

For a minimum of 80% of my practice of women who want to get pregnant naturally, 1-3 times a week of acupuncture plus the potent Chinese herbal formulas in capsule/powder form in my practice are good enough.

How long does a woman have to see me?

1. 6-12 cycles if there is no western medical diagnosis and the woman seems to have almost a regular cycle.  Basically, her gynecologist thinks that she should be pregnant within a year if she were to try on her own.

2.  12-18 cycles if there is a western medical diagnosis such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, fibroids, etc.).

3.  2-3 years if there is a history of long-term birth control use or fertility medications (IUI, IVF, etc.).

It sounds like a long time and a lot of commitment, doesn’t it?  Well, it is and I’m privileged to NOT specialize in fertility and still have 4-6 pregnant moms a year on average and have the freedom to pick and choose my patients who want to get pregnant.  It’s TREMENDOUS work to help a woman get pregnant whether I’m able to do it in 1 month or a couple of years.  I put my heart and soul into this medicine and believe me, I put my heart and soul into every couple who wants to get pregnant and are willing to walk their journey with me.  I’m not into helping EVERY couple get pregnant just because they want to have a baby.  It’s not about quantity in my practice.  It’s about quality. Babies are work.  They’re a ton of work just when they’re happy, healthy and whole.  As a parent and as a professional acupuncturist, I am focused on helping adults have strong, healthy and happy lives.

I accept couples who want to get healthy naturally, knowing that they will likely have a full-term, healthy and happy pregnancy.

Alleviate Your Stress with Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

As a normal part of life, stress enables us to get things done. If left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological, and even physical problems. Stress causes a disruption in the flow of vital energy, or Qi, through the body. These energetic imbalances can throw off the immune system or cause symptoms of pain, sleep disturbances, abnormal digestion, headaches, menstrual irregularities, aggravation of already troublesome health conditions and, over time, more serious illnesses can develop.

Stressful situations that last over a long period of time can create an ongoing low-level stress that puts continual pressure on the nervous system, increasing activity, and can cause the overproduction of hormones. The extra stress hormones over an extended period of time may wear out the body’s reserves, lead to fatigue, depression, a weakened immune system, and a host of serious physical and psychological ailments.

Some signs of stress overload include:

- anxiety or panic attacks
- feelings of constant pressure, hassled and hurried
- irritability and moodiness
- physical symptoms such as stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pain
- allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma
- problems sleeping
- overindulgence in food, alcohol, smoking, or drugs
- sadness or depression

Stress is often the cause of illness and the deterioration of health. Finding a release valve for your stress can help you stay healthy. According to Oriental medicine, stress, frustration, and unresolved anger can play an important part in throwing the immune system off and allowing pathogens to affect the body. Through acupuncture, these energy blockages can be addressed. Acupuncture points can help energy flow smoothly, and alleviate not only the symptoms of stress and anxiety, but the stress and anxiety itself.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the substantial benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of stress. Acupuncture improves circulation of blood throughout the body, which oxygenates the tissues and cycles out cortisol and other waste chemicals. The calming nature of acupuncture also decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and relaxes the muscles.

In addition to acupuncture, Oriental medicine offers a wide range of tools and techniques that can be integrated into your wellness plan to keep stress in check. These tools include Tui Na, Qi Gong exercises, dietary therapy, meditations and acupressure that you can administer at home.

While it isn’t always possible to remove the external forces causing stress, the ability to effectively deal with stress is a choice. Take time for yourself to cultivate the energy you need to handle your stress more skillfully and effectively.

If you or someone you know is experiencing stress or a stress related disorder, contact us for more information about how acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help you regain peace of mind, regulate your immune system and stay healthy and schedule an appointment today!

Acupuncture Gives Hope to Patients with PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe type of anxiety disorder. PTSD results from a person witnessing or being involved in a traumatic event that causes intense fear, helplessness or horror, such as, a natural disaster, rape, childhood abuse, a tragic accident, or war. Signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder typically begin within three months of a traumatic event but can, in some instances, occur years after the event.

Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder include:

1. Intrusive memories – flashbacks and nightmares of events

2. Avoidance and numbing – feeling emotionally numb, hopelessness about the future, avoiding anything that is a reminder of the precipitating event.

3. Hyperarousal – increased anxiety, irritability or anger, self-destructive behavior (e.g., excessive drinking), and an exaggerated startle response (jumping at sounds)

Acupuncture as Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

In the last couple of years, acupuncture, has been getting more attention as a treatment for PTSD, particularly from military and veterans since soldiers post combat are at a high risk for suffering from PTSD. The results from acupuncture are hopeful. Time and again, acupuncture has proven to be an effective modality for treating the symptoms of PTSD.

Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB), a group that previously provided relief to the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti and hurricane in New Orleans, launched The Military Stress Recovery Project. This organization provides free acupuncture treatments for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their families. Treated military personnel have reported improved mental clarity, less anxiety, and a reduction in stress.

There are good precedents for the use of acupuncture to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. Walter Reed Medical Center, a military hospital, has begun to investigate acupuncture as a viable treatment for returning veterans.

Researchers at the University of Louisville School of Medicine conducted a clinical trial examining the effects of acupuncture on the symptoms of PTSD. They analyzed depression, anxiety, and impairment in 73 people who had been diagnosed with PTSD and found that acupuncture provided treatment effects similar to group cognitive-behavioral therapy. Both acupuncture and cognitive-behavioral therapy were superior to the control group. Additionally, treatment effects of acupuncture and group therapy were maintained for 3 months after the end of treatment.

Why does acupuncture help the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder? Correctly placed needles help the body re-regulate itself from the effects of stress, PTSD, depression and anxiety. In turn, this allows the individual to focus on their activities and enable them to deal with daily events.

Treatment of Neurological Disorders with Acupuncture

A neurological disorder refers to a problem with the nervous system, which is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates the body’s activities. Nerve pain can arise from trauma, inflammation, stroke, disease, infection, nerve degeneration, exposure to toxic chemicals, and nutrient deficiencies.

Nerve pain is usually a sharp shooting pain or a constant burning sensation. Typically occurring in the same location with each episode, it can often be traced along the nerve pathway. Sometimes weakness or impaired function in the affected area occurs and the skin may be either overly sensitive or numb.

Some common neurological disorders acupuncture treats include:

Peripheral Neuropathy – damage to the peripheral nervous system, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to every other part of the body. Neuropathy caused by diabetes often affects the feet.

Trigeminal Neuralgia – facial pain, sometimes called Tic Douloureux, affects the trigeminal nerve which is responsible for impulses of touch, pain, pressure and temperature sent to the brain from the face, jaw, and gums.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – also known as median nerve entrapment, it occurs when swelling or irritation of the nerve or tendons in the carpal tunnel results in pressure on the median nerve.

Headaches – Headaches that can be treated with acupuncture include migraines, tension headaches, headaches occurring around the menstrual cycle, sinus headaches and stress-related headaches.

Acupuncture and Oriental medicine have been found effective as a conjunctive therapy for several neurological disorders and in treating pain and inflammation.

If you or someone you know is suffering from a neurological disorder or nerve pain please contact us for more information or to schedule an appointment!

Acupuncture Treats Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy describes damage to the peripheral nervous system, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to every other part of the body. In most cases, peripheral neuropathy is secondary to conditions such as diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, alcoholism, nutritional deficiencies, AIDS, or poisoning from heavy metals, chemotherapy, or various drugs.

Other causes include direct physical injury to a nerve (trauma), penetrated injuries, fractures or dislocated bones, pressure involving superficial nerves (ulna or radial) which can result from prolonged use of crutches or staying in same position, tumor, intraneural hemorrhage, exposure to cold, compression or entrapment (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome), radiation or atherosclerosis.

Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy may include:

- numbness or insensitivity to pain or temperature
- burning, tingling, or prickling sensation
- sharp or burning pain
- cramps
- extreme sensitivity to touch
- loss of balance and coordination,
- muscle weakness
- muscle wasting
- paralysis

Oriental medicine teaches that peripheral neuropathy is due to dampness moving to the limbs, where it obstructs the flow of Qi (energy) and blood within them. The treatment is twofold, to treat the underlying factor that is causing this dampness to accumulate and to directly facilitate the circulation of Qi and blood in the affected area. By improving circulation, the nerve tissues of the affected area can be nourished to repair function and reduce pain.

Peripheral neuropathy is a symptom for many different patterns of disharmony within the body. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine aims to treat each individual uniquely depending on what caused the neuropathy and how it manifests.

Relief for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

One of the most common job-related injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is responsible for the highest number of days lost among all work-related injuries. With more than two million visits to physicians’ offices and approximately 465,000 carpal tunnel release operations each year, it is the most frequent surgery of the hand and wrist.

Acupuncture is extremely effective at treating carpal tunnel syndrome, eliminating the need for surgery or the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or corticosteroids and recent studies suggest that acupuncture may be more effective than corticosteroids when it comes to treating carpal tunnel syndrome.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist made up of ligaments and bones. The median nerve and the tendons that connect the fingers to the muscles of the forearm pass through this tightly spaced tunnel. Carpal tunnel syndrome, also known as median nerve entrapment, occurs when swelling or irritation of the nerve or tendons in the carpal tunnel results in pressure on the median nerve. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers, as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move.

Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb, index and middle fingers. The symptoms often first appear during the night. As symptoms worsen, people might feel pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm during the day. Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. If not properly treated, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause irreversible nerve damage and permanent deterioration of muscle tissue.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with Acupuncture

From an Oriental medicine perspective, carpal tunnel syndrome is seen as a disruption of the flow of Qi and blood within the area and is associated with cold, dampness or wind penetrating the muscles and sinews of the wrist. In addition to reducing swelling, inflammation, and pain in the wrist, acupuncture addresses any headaches, neck pain, shoulder stiffness and sleeping problems that often accompany this condition. Your treatment may also take into account underlying conditions that contribute to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome including obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid problems, diabetes, and hormonal changes due to pregnancy and menopause.

If you or someone you know suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome, please call to find out more about how acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help you.

Foods to Boost Brain Health

Boost your brain’s overall heath and enhance its day to day functioning by including these foods in a healthy well-balanced diet.

Blueberries - Well known for their role in improving motor skills and overall learning capacity, blueberries are rich in antioxidants that are great for boosting your brain and helping to reverse the effects of aging on the brain. Most berries contain fisetin and flavenoid, which are great for improving your memory and allowing you to easily recall past events.

Fish - Omega-3 rich wild salmon, tuna, and herring help brain function by providing more oxygen, allowing it to retain new information while remembering old information. It also coats neurons with good fat, allowing them to move easier through the brain. Eating one serving of fish a week can decrease your chances of getting Alzheimer’s.

Leafy Green Vegetables - Vegetables such as cabbage, kale, spinach, collards, turnip greens and others are rich in vitamins, folate, and iron, all of which are essential for memory recall and increasing cognitive activity.

Nuts/Seeds - Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, folate, vitamin E, vitamin B6 and zinc all of which allow you to think more clearly. Choose seeds and nuts rich in thiamine and magnesium, which are great for memory, cognitive function, and brain nourishment.

Whole Grains - Rich in folate, thiamine, vitamin B6, and zinc, the nutrients found in whole grains increase blood flow to the brain, improving the quality and quantity of brain function and recall.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

One of the largest nerves in the head, the trigeminal nerve is responsible for impulses of touch, pain, pressure and temperature sent to the brain from the face, jaw, and gums. Characterized by a sudden, severe, electric shock-like or stabbing pain felt on one side of the jaw or cheek, these periodic attacks of pain generally last a few seconds and may be repeated one after the other.

The exact cause of trigeminal neuralgia is not known; however, physical nerve damage and stress can trigger painful attacks. Damage may also be the result of a biochemical change in the nerve tissue itself or an abnormal blood vessel compressing the nerve as it exits from the brain. In almost all cases, an excessive burst of nervous activity from a damaged nerve causes the painful attacks.

Acupuncture is considered a safe, adjunctive therapeutic option in patients with trigeminal neuralgia especially before invasive intervention is done.

Here is our most recent testimonial on the treatment of depression:

Anna is, in all senses of the word, a true Healer. Not only are her treatments extremely effective for the physical problems I’ve had, emotionally I feel like a different person every time I leave as well.

I started to see Anna because I felt depressed, and I left the first treatment already feeling much better than I’d felt in a very long time. Sometimes Anna gives me a mantra to work with or something to think about on the table. Other times, it’s just her wisdom and very presence that make feel better. Anna’s positive outlook is contagious, and she always seems to know exactly what to tell me to focus on mentally and emotionally to feel good.

I felt so much better after about ten treatments, that I started only going in for physical problems every now and then.  I hadn’t gone for about two weeks, and I started to feel bad again, so I made an appointment. I literally went into her office crying, and left laughing. I could not get over the difference, and how fast it was.

Anna is such a warm person, and I also love how her daughters are sometimes at the office. They make it feel much more like a healing center, and give a community feel to the experience.

Every time anyone I know starts talking about a physical or emotional issue, I always tell them about Anna and recommend her. Her acupuncture is true medicine, and has given me health, balance and peace of mind. What more can I ask for, really?  I give her my highest recommendation and feel so lucky to have found her.

Thank you thank you thank you Anna :)

Talk to you soon,

Brooke

It has been awhile since I shared with you a picture of the girls.

Angilynn is now 7 years old and is a second grader.

Anais turned 1 year old here during the summer.

As you can see, we had a very special guest with us to help Anais blow out her CANDLE.

Anna has the best herbs to treat bronchitis. I took her herbal prescription and I noticed right away that my coughing is 100% better from 1 month of coughing from bronchitis. I got sick again and took the pills and got better faster than normal the second time. I am a firm believer in her treatments! I have Grave’s Disease and my immunity is at stake here. When I get the common cold/flu, it’s 10 times worse for me. My endocrinologist didn’t give me much to go on, so I have to treat myself. Thank you, An, for guiding me on how to feel better.

- Aurora Marie Zhivago

Hey Anna,
I actually noticed a bit of a difference after taking the Magnolia Clear Sinus for only a few days so I am definitely going to continue taking them!

I am also very interested in the Immune + that you gave me as it sounds like just what I need to fend off all the sickies in my office.

I want to do whatever I can to improve my overall health and well-being so if there are any other herbs you would suggest, I would be more than happy to discuss adding them as well. It’s certainly a far cry from having to go to the doctor all the time and missing days of work due to the same illness!

Thanks for everything, I am really looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Yelp Review #49

Jeanna B.

Long Beach, CA

8/23/2011

Before I found Anna in January of this year, I was in a lot of pain.  My first car accident (severe whiplash, no broken bones) was at 9 years old.  Fast forward through some hard jars, falls, and various other injuries in 22 years.  I was suffering from debilitating headaches every other day, upper/middle/lower back pain, hip and foot pain.  For no apparent reason, my fingers would feel like they had been slammed in a car door.  My shoulders would be drastically uneven every other week.  It hurt to walk for longer than 10 minutes and my neck was so weak, I had to hold my head up when I would lean over to fill out paperwork or read.  My chiropractor was sometimes seeing me 3 times a week to put everything back into place but frequently these treatments held only 3-4 hours.

Tomorrow will be my 75th acupuncture treatment and I no longer see the chiropractor.  I am now enjoying every morning because the headaches are not there.  I’m no longer popping pain pills and living in a fog half of my waking moments.  The numbness and pain in my arms and hands have left.  The strength in my neck and back has increased and my posture has improved greatly.  We are still working on some lower back/hip pain and a faint weakness in my feet, but I can now wear flip flops after being trapped in shoes that could accommodate my somewhat bulky $300 foot braces for over 2 years.

Anna’s kind words and treatments have given me the ability to live a much fuller life.  The results I’ve found with Anna supersede all others.  Since my first treatment, my pain levels have gone down around 70%.  I believe I need around 20-50 more treatments to graduate from my pain.  Just a little bit further to go until I’m pain free.  Something I never thought possible before I met Anna.

Here’s Pikachu with 5 needles in her to help remedy her itchy skin.

Look how calm she had become in just a few minutes!

Headaches: Successful treatment

July 5th, 2011
A patient has been seeing me for acupuncture treatments since the beginning of July.  She has received 11 treatments for a constant headache that she has suffered from for over the past 1.5 years.  We are already at 75% improvement.  This patient began with 3 treatments a week and now she is down to treatments twice a week.
I am a Dr. Tan Balance Method practitioner.  I DO NOT place needles in the area of pain.  Traditional Chinese Medicine is a style of acupuncture that typically places the needles in the area of pain.  I studied TCM from 1994-1998 and I practiced TCM from 1999-2006.  Since 2006, I have been a Balance Method practitioner 99.9999% of the time because my patients and I observe immediate and LONG-TERM results.  I DID NOT receive these types of results with TCM.  If you’d like to know more about Balance Method, which is based on Classical Chinese Medicine, you can check out my teacher’s website: www.DrTanShow.com.  Dr. Tan’s style surpasses TCM hands down whether it’s for musculo-skeletal or internal diseases.  If I was wrong, I would never have switched over from TCM after 7 years of practicing that method.
I ask ALL of my patients to give acupuncture with me 6-10 treatments BEFORE we actually start to see results.  I do this because everyone heals at a different pace.  Some people heal faster than others.   To see that this patient has already achieved 75% improvement by the 11th treatment is awesome AND it is typical in my clinic, Elements in Harmony Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs.   My prognosis:  with continual treatment at this same pace, this patient should be at 100% improvement within another 11 treatments, if not, at least, 90% improvement.
It is extremely important to understand that this patient was working as a screen writer in Hollywood until she realized that her chronic headaches, anxiety and other health issues were severely affecting her quality of life, thus her creativity.
Besides her headaches improving, her anxiety is significantly less, she is much happier, she laughs more often (whereas before she rarely laughed), she is more centered, she doesn’t feel like laying down all of the time since she has much more energy and she feels excited to get back to work.
This is the nature of my work day in and day out. This is what I do for a living.  I help people regain their lives.  I don’t focus on getting people in through my doors to stay FOREVER.  Don’t get me wrong, many of them do continue coming in for “tune-up” treatments (what I call the 5,000 mile tune-up) and there are those who may never actually graduate from their pain due to the lifestyles that they carry and they don’t get treated by me according to my desired protocol to get them to actually graduate or my experience is still limited to prevent them from healing completely; however, for the most part, when a patient suffering from a DIS-EASE, I make it clear to my patients how many times a week, for how long and if a specific Chinese herbal formula will help them significantly reduce or GRADUATE them for their ailments.
I am a results-oriented practitioner and the mini-case story above is a perfect example of how I achieve results in my practice.
—-
Below is a great story.  The style that these short-term trained practitioners use is based on TCM, primarily regarding ear acupuncture.  I still use ear acupuncture in conjunction to my own practice about 90% of the time.  It’s very wonderful to see how acupuncture is helping our military.

US Army and Battlefield Acupuncture

Posted on: Tuesday, 1 April 2008, 09:30 CDT

A medical procedure dating back thousands of years was introduced to patients and medical staff for one week in March at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC). The hospital, located near Ramstein Air Base, Germany, is the largest and most modern US military medical facility outside the United States.

A limited form of acupuncture, called battlefield acupuncture, was introduced to LRMC doctors who applied the procedure to war- wounded service members and local patients for pain relief, and often with significant results.

Major (Dr.) Conner Nguyen was exposed to acupuncture as both a patient and physician and was equally impressed in both roles. As a patient, Major Nguyen experienced 25 percent increased range of motion and a 50 percent reduction in pain for chronic shoulders and upper back pain he endured for several years.

As a pain physician specialist at LRMC, Major Nguyen recruited his most challenging patients with whom traditional pain treatment offered limited relief. Within minutes of the short golden studs inserted on their ears, many said they enjoyed a pain reduction of up to 75 percent.

A reduction of 25 percent would be considered a success with traditional pain medications, Major Nguyen said. In one case, a patient broke into tears when the severe pain he had been suffering from for more than a year subsided within moments.

When the military acupuncturists who introduced battlefield acupuncture return to conduct the follow-up certification training required to practice ancient form of medicine, Major Nguyen will be among the list of LRMC physicians desiring to add acupuncture as another tool in their medical kit.

“It allows a provider like me to confidently complete a treatment and expect a good result within minutes,” Major Nguyen said. Other advantages he noted are virtually no significant complications, patients are subjected to little or no discomfort, and immediate results that can be “quite spectacular sometimes.”

Major Nguyen received his interim hands-on training during the weeklong visit by Col. (Dr.) Stephen Burns and Col. (Dr.) Richard Niemtzow, two of the 40 Department of Defense doctors trained as a licensed acupuncturist.

Colonel Niemtzow developed and named the battlefield acupuncture technique in 2001. It is a radical departure from classical Chinese, French and German ear acupuncture. He said he realized its possible military value and the events of the World Trade Center influenced him to name it battlefield acupuncture.

As an Air Force acupuncturist, Colonel Niemtzow has trained hundreds of his military counterparts. Battlefield acupuncture focuses on locations on the ear that he said have been known for hundreds of years as effective areas for pain control. The ear is also practical because it can be readily accessed whether on the battlefield or in a hospital bed.

Acupuncture can also be a practical means for treating pain in the military, he said, in instances such as a Soldier who develops a migraine headache at the onset of a mission. Where pain medication could cloud the mind and compromise the mission, acupuncture could offer long-lasting relief within minutes.

Introducing acupuncture to doctors trained in traditional Western medicine often meets with raised eyebrows, but the reception is warming.

“In the beginning, many people were skeptical, but after seeing it demonstrated on patients and the benefits achieved — especially in the area of pain — the majority of physicians embraced it and learned how to use it in their practice as an adjunctive therapy,” said Colonel Niemtzow, who is the consultant for alternative and complimentary medicine to the Air Force surgeon general.

The ancient form of medicine was readily received at LRMC, said Col. (Dr.) Stephen Princiotta, the deputy commander for clinical services here.

“The doctors who saw it in action and heard about it have been very excited about the opportunity to add acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy to what we already have been able to accomplish with western medicine,” Colonel Princiotta said.

One LRMC doctor previously trained under Colonel Niemtzow as well as well attending the Helms Medical Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles for an additional 300 hours of acupuncture training. Maj. (Dr.) Teri Simpson is an anesthesiologist by trade, but uses acupuncture one day a week at the LRMC pain clinic with great success.

“I love it,” Major Simpson said. “It can be life-changing when the patient responds immediately and looks at you like you’re a magician.”

Major Simpson said she tells them she doesn’t completely understand how it works but is always happy to see a patient break into a smile who was in misery only minutes before.

In addition to using the small studs that resemble a small pierced earring, Major Simpson uses the longer needles more commonly associated with acupuncture. The frequency of application and the duration of relief vary with each patient, but treatment can progress from about two times a week to as little as once a month or longer. In some cases, further acupuncture treatment may not be required.

Acupuncture doesn’t work for all of her patients; however. About 15 percent do not respond to acupuncture, Major Simpson said, but of the patients that do, their pain reduction often averages about 75 percent.

One of those patients was Army Spc. Bradley Phillips, an Army scout whose back pain while deployed to Iraq increased to the point where he required treatment at LRMC. Specialist Phillips, a 21 year old with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment out of Fort Hood, Texas, had successfully received acupuncture treatment before by an Army medic and enthusiastically agreed to for the opportunity to be a part of the battle acupuncture program.

Specialist Phillips said he preferred acupuncture because it allowed him to avoid taking pain medications and their side effects. As Major Simpson applied two studs in his left ear and five in his right, as well as a few probes into his lower back with a longer needle, Specialist Phillips’ pain slowly eased away.

“While I’m just standing here I feel a lot better,” he said. In addition, the young Soldier edged the closest he’d been to touching his toes in six months.

For Senior Airman Jillian Sandbothe, traditional pain medication could never ease the headaches and upper back pain resulting from whiplash caused by a rear-end collision last April.

“It was amazing,” she said of her initial acupuncture treatment that provided total relief from her headache. “I couldn’t believe it the first time it happened. I could almost function like a normal person again.”

Studs used for battlefield acupuncture barely penetrate the skin and fall out in about three days. When that occurred, her headaches returned and Airman Sandbothe arrived at the LRMC pain clinic for follow-up treatment. As before, the pain diminished as Simpson plied her acupuncture craft.

“I don’t know how it works and I don’t really care as long it keeps working,” said Airman Sandbothe, who is assigned to the 52nd Component Maintenance Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.

Headaches: Testimonial

Testimonial:

NO MORE HEADACHES

For over 10 years, I would suffer 3 to 4 days every week with a severe headache.  The chiropractor would adjust my neck every week but a day or two later I’d be back in the same shape.  The only pain killer that seemed to help was Excedrin Migraine.  In addition to the bottle I had at home, I kept a bottle in my car, a bottle in my purse and one in my desk drawer at work.  At age 30, most days I felt like I was 60 years old.

In early 2010, I relocated to Southern California from the midwest and I found a very good chiropractor.  He gave me advice on the best methods for alleviating my issues.  However, no matter what I tried, I was still in his office, in pain, every week.  I could have gone 3 times a week at some points, but it was not something I could financially justify since it obviously was not “working”.  The relief was only temporary and I wanted more than a band-aid fix.

In a discussion with my chiropractor about my complete frustration, he suggested I try acupuncture again.  I had tried traditional acupuncture before but was not impressed with the results.  It seemed to help a little bit but nothing notable (other than the electricity they put through the needles was something my body could not handle).  I scoured the web and found Anna.  The amount of information she provided on her website and in her youtube videos was astounding.  I read over the information very carefully and understood that if I wanted this treatment to work, I would have to devote a lot of time to her.

I called the number for her office one morning and was amazed.  She answered the phone and discussed my history, my concerns and set me up for my first appointment within that first conversation.  January 5th 2011 was my first appointment and the day my life changed forever.  Little by little, treatment by treatment, the pain came less frequently.  My chiropractor noticed that my body held the adjustments longer and the number of vertebra out of place was getting less and less.  It’s been 6 months since my first visit and I’ve had almost 60 treatments.  I’ve gone over a month without a headache.  My chiropractor hasn’t seen me in over 6 weeks because I don’t feel like I need to go.  The pain I used to feel is almost like a distant memory.  Anna’s acupuncture has done amazing things for my body and her wisdom that she has shared has done amazing things for my mind.  She truly is a healer.

Here’s one of our 48+ Yelp reviews:

“If I could give more than five stars I would.
Anna is an exceptional and skilled acupuncturist. I last saw Anna for back
problems, which I know is from the epidural I received from my C-section. I
couldn’t lay flat without painful back spasms. She used an intense treatment
and did what she could in one treatment; I have twin infants, so I don’t have
much time to get away. After the treatment my back was still a little sore as
she told me would be the possibility; HOWEVER, that night I was able to sleep
on my back, which was something I could not do since the babies were
born. It was the greatest feeling to not have to be propped up.
What also makes Anna special is she truly cares for her patients. She has
always taken the extra time (when she can) to listen. I’ve never felt rushed
with her. She is so easy to talk to. She makes you feel like a friend whom you
haven’t seen for years.
Anna is a master of her trade and I definitely recommend her.”
